Abstract

To identify the sex is the first problem in the artificial maturation of eels. Although several reports and manipulation experience point out that the sex of eels can be identified from the body size and the morphology of the pectoral fins, the criteria do not always apply to aquacultured eels. Scientist have tried to use molecular biomarkers or differences in physiological responses between two sex of eels to distinguish sex. Although they have already achieved, there are still some points to be elucidated, anyways, the major disadvantages are that it takes time and laboratory equipment is demanded. We have used surgical operation to identify the sex in eels, the results have been published. However, due to the large incision, it takes at least 2 weeks to recover, and there may be infection problems. We employ a commercial "ear picker endoscope" with a small incision to directly watch the gonads to identify the sex. The results are impress and the cost is acceptable, it can be regarded as a cheap endoscope for small animals. Although this method has the advantages, its major disadvantage of this method is that the image resolution is easily affected by liquid although its micro camera is waterproof, and it is being improved.
