Asian demand has pushed up prices for European Eels to new record highs.

The Portuguese Police report another seizure of Endangered Eels being trafficked to Asia this time from Faro. SEPRONA the Spanish wildlife Police are leading the campaign and are frustrated by the increase in trafficking.

It is remarkable that France has reported zero seizures but has declared catches of 45 tons about 150 million eels. SEG is surveying all the legal buyers this week to calculate the likely legal level of trade to date.

As a minimum SEG estimates 35 tons or 110 million has already reached Asia. This is a billion Euro business once grown on in the ponds of Asia.

2018 is likely to be the worst year on record as the harvest of Asia own Japonica eels has collapsed to a few tons so Asian demand has pushed up prices for European Eels to new record highs.
